Summary/Objective

This position provides daily supervision over trades persons performing maintenance, repair and alterations in university facilities, and organizes in-house and contract resources, in order to effectively maintain a safe, functional, clean, efficient and attractive living and learning environment. This position requires minimal supervision

Work Environment

  • This position reports to the Zones Operations Manager-Buildings, along with 4 other Building Maintenance Supervisors
  • Reporting directly to this position are various trades persons assigned according to the zone of responsibility
  • The nature of the role this position plays within the organization is to direct on a daily basis, all maintenance work in a particular zone and cover direction of work in other zones as needed
  • This position will be responsible for all aspects of maintenance, service, emergency responses, and repairs 24-hours, 7 days per week
  • These activities are part of a system of well-defined, reliable processes focused on preventing facility problems when possible, responding to facility problems when required, and providing reliable services to the university community 
  • The focus of the department is on the interaction of people, facilities, and service delivery systems 
  • The decisions and actions of building maintenance operations personnel are consistent with an understanding of the statement of common purpose, the strategic plan, and an appreciation of the interdependence of all university departments
  • Directly supervises 6-10 full time trades people, can be as many as 20 
  • Responsible for helping Manager with $4,400,000+ facilities operations budget
  • Responsible for managing and assisting in the completion of approximately 2,000 to 3,000 work orders per year

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

Salary Range

Required Education and Experience

  • High School degree/GED
  • 8-10 years journeyman level trades experience
  • 2-3 years supervisory experience with various trades in an institutional environment
  • Ability to read and review blueprints
  • Experience working in a diverse cultural environment and managing a diverse work force
  • Valid driver’s license

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Professional District of Columbia trades’ license
  • Experience using a computerized maintenance management system
  • Budget management experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or other applicable field

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

  • This position requires experience working in a diverse cultural environment, managing a diverse workforce and working in a very collaborative and team oriented environment
  • The activity managed by this position occurs in all 50 university buildings and requires a significant amount of walking along with some lifting and working from ladders and scaffolds
