Summary/Objective

This position provides the full range of technical and consultative services to faculty and administrators seeking and receiving support for research, education, service, training, and other programs from government agencies, corporations, private foundations, and other funders. This position interacts with representatives of the full range of extramural funding sources (such as federal, state, private, and international) and their prime role is that of facilitating grant and contract submissions and ensuring compliance with sponsor and university requirements. The candidate acts professionally and performs duties in a way the reflect positively upon AU and the Office of Sponsored Programs. 

This position is focused on the review, verification, and compliance checking of proposal documents prior to OSP approval/submission to the external sponsor. These functions enhance proposal quality and ensure compliance.

Essential Functions

  3. Pre-Award Administration: Serves as a subject matter expert on research administration. Facilitates and reviews grant and contract proposals to ensure compliance with state, Federal and University rules, regulations, policies, and practices (such as FAR, Uniform Guidance, sponsor guidelines, etc.); Interprets a wide variety of policies, procedures, and funding opportunities, solicitations, and announcements and provides guidance to staff and faculty in understanding applicable policies and obligations; Consults with sponsors as necessary to interpret their guidelines and needs. Provides technical and administrative assistance to faculty, staff, and financial units of the individual schools and colleges. Meets with faculty and staff as appropriate. Submits proposals to sponsors after institutional approval; Reviews proposals and associated proposal documents at the proposal stage; identifies issues, and in collaboration with administrators and Principal Investigators coordinates revisions and corrections; Provides proposal development support when needed; Reviews Just in Time responses in a timely manner; Keep leadership informed in a timely manner regarding status of program activities and identification of any areas of concern; Participates in the upkeep and maintenance of institutional sponsor portals and the institutional electronic research administration system (Cayuse).

Training and Operational Excellence: Contributes to the development and maintenance of standard operating procedures, research resources and website content for proposal and grant management; Develops and maintains training material for the research community in research administration. Participates in the training of the researchers and research administrators at the University; Participate in training of new pre-award professionals in the OSP and units as assigned; Participates in research administration forums, and award project meetings and other university-wide activities and initiatives as assigned.

Work Environment

  • The Grant and Contract Manager reports directly to the Director, Office of Sponsored Programs. The incumbent works alongside five other Grant &Contract Managers, four Grant and Contract Managers, one Senior Grant & Contract Manager. The Grant and Contract Manager provides, in a collegial and proactive manner, timely and essential assistance to faculty and administrators in securing grants and contracts.

Salary Range

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree is required. Typical majors include business, public administration, and political science. 
  • Two to three years’ experience in successfully reviewing grant and contract proposals.
  • Coursework in grant and contract law or experience with a research project is desirable to facilitate the success of the faculty liaison model.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Master’s degree preferred.
