Summary/Objective

Serves as a primary health care provider to American University students, with the scope of practice of a Nurse Practitioner according to the DC Board of Nursing or a Physician Assistant according to the DC Board of Health. Serves as a resource to SHC on best patient care practices.

Work Environment

  • This position reports directly to the Medical Director for clinical and administrative supervision

  • The Health Practitioner performs routine physical examinations and preventative health measures, including immunizations and routine laboratory procedures, and initiates treatments which lie within the health practitioner's scope of practice

  • Prescribes, coordinates, delegates and evaluates patient care in collaboration with student health center practitioners

  • Must be able to successfully work collaboratively with physician and other mid-level providers

  • The Health Practitioner sees approximately 20 - 30 patients per day and coordinates the care of a panel of approximately 1,000 students annually

  • The position can be either a 10, 11, or 12 month position

  • One early evening shift per week is required

Salary Range

  • Commensurate with experience

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Current NP licensure or PA licensure in the District of Columbia
  • National Certification as a Family, Adult, or Women's Health Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant
  • At least one year of clinical experience as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant in a primary care setting.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Prior experience in college health
  • Master's degree

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

  • Hiring offers for this position are contingent on successful completion of a background check

  • Requires strong interpersonal skills and the ability to discuss medical information with patients in an understandable manner with a high degree of tact

  • Ability to coach and mentor nurses and medical assistants is important
