Summary/Objective

The Assistant Dean of the Office of Career and Professional Development (“OCPD”) in the Washington College of Law (WCL) oversees all operations of the office, develops a strategic vision for the office’s operations, and serves as the public representative and spokesperson for the office in the greater legal community. The Assistant Dean works with minimal supervision and sets and implements policies and procedures for the office. The Assistant Dean is also responsible for working with legal employers in the public and private sectors, law students, and alumni and will be considered an expert on the legal employment market in the Washington, DC, metro area, the national market, and beyond

Essential Functions

  1. Development and Coordination of OCPD Work in Career Planning and Search Assistance. Ensures the effective conception and implementation of educational programs, career counseling, and recruitment initiatives. Ensures that all students, beginning in their first year at WCL, are educated about resources relevant to their particular career path(s), effective job application documents, and appropriate networking strategies Over Designs and delivers annual career and professional development programming and oversees the creation and execution of an annual calendar of events. Supervises and certifies annual employment data to NALP, the American Bar Association, and any other oversight bodies as directed by the Senior Assistant Dean and/or the Office of the Dean. Communicates narratives around, facts about, and concerns regarding these statistics to faculty, staff, students, and alumni. Designs and oversees an integrated communication and marketing strategy across platforms to support and refine recruitment programs to reflect continuing changes in the marketplace, and in employer recruiting and selection patterns.
  2. Collaboration and Marketing Oversees the design and implementation of outreach programs to legal employers in all sectors of the legal profession to enhance student access to career opportunities. Formulates an outreach program for students, faculty, staff and alumni to inform them about the office’s mission and programs.
  3. Administration Develops and implements internal administrative procedures. Prepares and monitors budget. As requested, prepares monthly, annual and other periodic reports regarding office goals and achievements for the Senior Assistant Dean, including the annual report of employment statistics for the law school’s recent graduates. Hires, trains, develops and evaluates staff members.
  4. Professional Development Establishes and maintains contact with peers at other law schools and with hiring partners and other attorney recruitment personnel in law firms, organizations, bar associations, and other professional organizations. May attend professional association conferences to enhance the reputation of WCL and to implement innovative programs.

Supervisory Responsibility

  • Serves as the direct supervisor for all FT and all PT staff in OCPD.

Salary Range

  • Commensurate with experience 

Required Education and Experience

  • Juris Doctor
  • 4-6 years of relevant experience

Preferred Education and Experience

  • 5-8 years of relevant experience

  • Strong preference for experience in legal education in general and law school career services in particular.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

  • Legal career services in an academic environment or law practice experience, and a commitment to helping law students develop the insight, skills, and experience needed to make a successful transition to the legal profession. Proven management and communication skills, and familiarity with legal career opportunities in Washington, DC, and around the country
