Summary/Objective

Working in and reporting to the University Office of Development and Alumni Relations, the Assistant Dean of Development and Alumni Relations for the School of International Service (“SIS”) is the principal fundraiser for SIS at American University. The Assistant Dean of Development and Alumni Relations works on behalf of the Dean of SIS, shaping and executing plans for fundraising to meet the financial needs of the Dean’s academic priorities for the School. The Assistant Dean of Development and Alumni Relations works primarily in the area of major gift fundraising for SIS. The Assistant Dean of Development and Alumni Relations plans, implements, and oversees the major gift fundraising program for SIS with emphasis on gifts of $100,000 to $1,000,000+.

 

The Assistant Dean of Development and Alumni Relations serves as a key partner to the Dean and as an ambassador of SIS. The Assistant Dean of Development and Alumni Relations supervises the activities of the Director of Development, SIS and Development Coordinator. They work as a collaborative team in support of donor cultivation, solicitation, stewardship, alumni programming, and special events. In coordination with the Dean, the Assistant Dean of Development and Alumni Relations and SIS Development and Alumni Relations team strategically recruit and staff members for the SIS Board of Advisors. The Assistant Dean of Development and Alumni Relations and SIS Development and Alumni Relations team strive to maximize the Board of Advisor’s effectiveness, working closely with the Dean’s office to establish agendas and programs for meetings and communications.

Work Environment

  • This position oversees three full-time staff members
  • This position requires travel approximately 25-40% of time
  • Position also requires occasional evening and weekend work

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

Salary Range

  • Commensurate with experience

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 5-8 years of relevant experience
  • Supervisory experience
  • Familiarity with and experience following guidelines of an established Prospect Management System
  • Computer literacy with MS Office suite or equivalent and familiarity with fundraising systems
  • Superior written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
