About the Department/Unit

The Center for Student Involvement (CSI) is the hub for the student experience at American University. CSI is home to Student Government, Student Clubs, Student Media, Fraternity and Sorority Life, and Graduate Leadership Council. CSI is dedicated to leadership development, organizational advising, and programs that help foster a sense of belonging for the next generation of changemakers.


The Assistant Director (AD), Program Initiatives is critical member of the Center for Student Involvement (CSI) team who manages high caliber events with multiple external stakeholders while also being responsible for the day to day operations of student programming for the office. This position trains, advises and supports the major campus Programming Boards; Student Union Board (SUB), Kennedy Political Union (KPU), Women’s Initiative and Founder’s Week. The AD is administrator who has oversite of the programming boards $500,000 programming budget. and are responsible for managing large scale program planning and production, contract negotiations and serves as the liaison with talent and middle agents. The AD will also manage the office budget lines for Late Night and Weekend Programming and All-American Welcome Week Events to execute engaging and inclusive programming for the student body.

Essential Functions

  1. Resource and Budget Management: Manage the bidding and contract process for securing guest artist/service provider services. Ensure fiscal responsibility, effective planning, and effective use of resources, confirming that program spending complies with university standards and guidelines.
  2. Student Advising and Training: Meet regularly with programming board directors for Student Union Board (SUB), Kennedy Political Union (KPU), Women’s Initiative, Founder’s Week. Provide training and on-site management of events each semester for students on budget and risk management, programming and special event logistics.
  3. Event Planning and Execution: Responsible for the planning and implementation of major student-initiated and CSI programming including lectures, concerts and other special events. Work closely with staff colleagues in University Center, Public Safety, Facilities Management, Athletics, and others, to address the program needs of campus student leaders and event planners.
  4. Departmental Tasks: Serve on selected Office of Campus Life and university-wide committees, major programming and other office wide initiatives as assigned by the CSI Director. Assist with university events including Commencement, Welcome Week, All-American Weekend and others as assigned by the Director.

Supervisory Responsibility

  • Supervise Programming Assistant.

Work Environment

  • Ability to work with a flexible schedule.
  • Night and weekend commitments occur frequently.

  • Full Time.
  • Exempt.

Salary Range

  • Commensurate with experience.

Required Education and Experience

  • Master's degree.
  • 2-4 years of relevant experience.
