Summary/Objective

The role of the Assistant Director of Trial Advocacy Curriculum & Faculty is to ensure continued success in the nationally ranked Stephen S. Weinstein Trial Advocacy Program (“Program”).  The Trial Advocacy Program currently offers 23 specialized trial advocacy courses annually in 44 small sections to more than 450 students at the American University Washington College of Law.  This position will oversee the trial advocacy curriculum as well as oversee the 50+ adjunct faculty members currently teaching for the Program.  A crucial role of this individual is to make sure that the adjunct faculty members receive proper training, guidance, and feedback throughout their teaching for the Program.  This individual will also review all syllabi, make suggested edits and changes, and ensure the course comply with the American Bar Association (“ABA”) requirements for experiential education.  Specifically, ABA standards 303 and 304 contain certain requirements that must be met in order to fulfill experiential education requirements, including direct supervision of students by faculty members, opportunities for performance and feedback, opportunities for self-evaluation and a classroom component.  This position is responsible to ensure that all trial advocacy courses comply with these ABA standards.

 

Additionally, the Assistant Director of Trial Advocacy Curriculum & Faculty will supervise the administration of currently existing programs, but also create new curriculum and programs.  Currently, the Program offers an annual Litigation Skills Summer Institute, consisting of 3 weeks of truncated litigation skills training including courses in Fact Witness Depositions, Expert Witness Depositions, Civil Trial Advocacy and Litigating in a High Tech Courtroom.  The Program also facilitates a 2 week advocacy training program offered in Spanish to attorneys and judges from Spanish-speaking countries seeking more experience in the adversarial legal justice system.  This position will also help foster growth in the currently offered Advocacy LL.M., with a goal of providing the LL.M. online and also in Spanish. 

Work Environment

  • The Assistant Director of Trial Advocacy Curriculum & Adjunct Faculty will supervise approximately 50 adjunct faculty members who currently teach trial advocacy courses. These individuals are practicing attorneys and local judges in the Washington, D.C. area

  • Further supervisor responsibilities include the supervision of part-time staff in the Trial Advocacy Program, which includes supervision of the Program Coordinator, LL.M. and Special Events Coordinator, and Senior Administrative Assistant

Salary Range

  • Commensurate with experience

Required Education and Experience

  • Juris Doctor

  • 3-5 years of relevant experience

  • Experience with course scheduling and curriculum development for a law program

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Spanish fluency
