Summary/Objective

This position assists the Assistant Athletic Director, Communications in publicizing American's 16 intercollegiate athletic teams and writing, editing, and publishing of all external athletic channels, in print and digital. In addition, the position will be responsible for managing and executing all communication, file sharing, and cataloging of imagery and licensable materials regarding the department's Name Image and Likeness (NIL) policy. This position directly supervises 12-18 interns and work-study students.

Essential Functions

  1. Writes and edits external athletic messaging: To provide accurate and relevant information to the public and the media. Prepares and provides pre-and postgame information for approximately half of AU's athletic contests to provide accurate and relevant information to the public and the media.
  2. Serves as the primary media relations contact for multiple sports, as assigned: Makes final decisions on record-book structure (including layout and design, statistical structure, and content), feature stories for the AU website. Maintains team web pages, team video highlights, photos, and all social media applications for each sport assignment. Drafts press releases.
  3. Responsible for managing and executing all communication, file sharing, and cataloging of imagery and licensable materials: With regard to the department's Name Image and Likeness (NIL) policy. This will include being the external point person for the athletics communications office on these matters and acting as department liaison with all third-party software and social media entities utilized by the department and student-athletes. Such duties will require knowledge and compliance with associated and developing institution and NCAA NIL policies.
  4. Manages event staff: Compiles statistics at approximately half of AU's athletic contests to provide accurate and relevant information to the public and the media.
  5. Responsible for the supervision and training of all interns and part-time employees: Maintains general office order and organization to maintain a smooth-running office and proper game-day media relations/operations for the Athletic Department.
  6. Conducts research to create and maintain records.

Work Environment

  • Fairly frequent traveling in-season, including ravel with men's basketball team to all away-from-home events.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

  • Full Time, 35 hours/week.
  • Coordinator/Analyst B.
  • Exempt.
  • Night and weekend work as required.

Salary Range

  • Commensurate with experience.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Public Relations, or a related field.
  • 1-3 years of relevant experience.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

  • Extensive experience in sports information and game statistics programs.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to direct/produce live-stream events.
  • Experience with Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Premiere, and all Microsoft Programs.
  • Strong experience in social media, video, broadcast, and photography.
  • Strong writing and editing skills and publishing knowledge.
