Summary/Objective

The Assistant Director of Athletics for Digital Media and Communications is responsible for the strategic communications, content generation, sport program promotion, broadcast operations and digital initiatives for the American University Athletics and Recreation Department. As a member of the senior staff, this position will report to the Associate Director of Athletics, will lead the Athletic Communications team and be an integral member of the department’s revenue generation efforts. The incumbent must be an excellent team leader and team player, content creator, strategic thinker, social media manager and overall communicator.

 

This position supervises and manages department communications across all channels in support of 65 staff members and the 16 intercollegiate athletic teams including over 250 student-athletes. The position adept at communicating, promoting, and developing constituent relations for these areas, 400-plus intercollegiate competitions and multiple department events annually. It also serves as spokesperson for media inquires regarding AU Athletics and assists with marketing, fan engagement and brand development for the department.

Supervisory Responsibility

  • Reporting directly to this position are three full-time employees; Associate Director, Assistant Director and Video Coordinator and multiple interns, work-study students and contract/event employees

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

  • Full Time
  • 35 hours per week
  • Occasional travel required

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent education, training or experience
  • 4-6 years of relevant experience in athletic administration, sports marketing, public relations or journalism
  • Knowledge of NCAA and Patriot League rules and regulations
  • Strong organizational, writing and interpersonal skills are required
  • Knowledge of newest digital media platforms, broadcast methods, desk top publishing and statistics mmanagement computer software as well as Internet/web site management 

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Master's degree
