Summary/Objective
Essential Functions
-
Perform configuration, scripting, and application development on a wide variety of computer and network hardware, cloud based services and server systems. Monitor network systems and traffic maintain the confidentiality, availability and integrity of the information infrastructure. Perform system administration and development tasks to protect the internal university network from unauthorized access or abuse and to streamline information security processes. Deploy, administer and optimize the infrastructure and software that monitors University enterprise logs and network traffic to maintain awareness of usage patterns and detect possible abuse. Assists other IT units in resolving security issues and ensures correct procedures are followed.

Provide security consultation for new technology services: identify potential risks, provide guidance on applicable university policies and regulatory requirements, and recommend approaches to remediate the risk.

Contribute to the development and maintenance of information security strategy and architecture. This includes areas such as administrative systems, electronic mail, web servers, monitoring servers and network and server operating systems. Facilitate the enforcement of policies, process and procedures to assure the security of University information. Analyze business impact and exposure based on emerging security threats, vulnerabilities and risks.

Perform forensic analysis of network, system, and application logs to assist in troubleshooting, incident response, and possible use in disciplinary or legal proceedings.

Maintain awareness of current technical developments through research, self-study, participation in information sharing and cooperation activities and formal training programs.

Work with the Director of Information Security and the CISO to mentor and manage junior Cyber Security Engineers and participate in strategic planning for information security program.

The position requires that certain duties be regularly performed outside of normal working hours and requires the incumbent to carry a mobile phone. The position also requires that the incumbent perform “on call” duties that may require transportation to the University computing facilities.

Required Education and Experience
-
Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or equivalent work experience plus 5-8 years of information security work experience is required. A professional security certification (i.e., CISSP, ISSP, SSCP, GIAC, etc.) is highly desirable.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

Experience with Incident Response, Log management, analysis, and monitoring; Virtual Private Networks, Virtualization, Firewalls, Web Application Security and Intrusion Detection/Prevention systems is expected.

Strong technical background is required in operating systems (UNIX/Linux, Windows, MacOS), Internet applications (electronic mail, web, DNS/DHCP, TCP/IP), desktop software, virus detection programs), encryption (SSL, TLS, IPSEC) and networking hardware and software.

Must understand protocols and standards such as TCP/IP, LDAP and 802.1x; network management tools such as SNMP. A familiarity with process improvement models such as CMMI/ITIL is preferred. A background in scripting and programming (Python and Powershell) and network operations in a higher education setting is desirable.

Excellent oral and written English skills are required. Candidate must be able to work within a collegial group of Information Technology professionals and should exhibit an understanding of issues relating to workload sharing and documentation. Candidates should be customer-oriented and comfortable working with a user base with widely varying computer skills and support needs.
