Summary/Objective

The Space Planner will support the advancement of the university’s campus plan and its goals of improving space utilization effectiveness and efficiency.  As a member of the Office of Space Planning and Management (OSPM), and reporting to the Director of Planning and Project Development, this position will develop planning solutions that address program needs that support and advance the university’s campus plan, mission, and short-term and long-term development.  The incumbent will develop program options that address space needs, translate these options into conceptual project plans, develop graphical information to visually communicate these plans, and distill effective presentation and communication materials that support a broad range of decision making across the American University (AU) community.  This position will also build and maintain peer relationships over time with all key representatives involved in the space planning process, based on professional camaraderie and mutual respect.

Essential Functions

  1. Space Planning: Manage space request process and serve as primary point of contact for all space usage requests. Manage and conduct studies and analysis associated with physical planning efforts and as required to support larger scale capital and smaller scale non-capital project initiatives.
  2. Other: Manage and/or support special OSPM projects as assigned. Perform other duties as assigned.

Salary Range

  • Commensurate with experience.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Planning, Interior Design, or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in architectural, planning, design, or other related fields.
  • Experience creating physical space planning options and floor plans.
  • Experience in campus master planning or space planning on a campus-wide level.
  • Experience using AutoCAD and other graphic software programs.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Master’s degree in Architecture, Planning, Interior Design, or related field.
  • Experience working in a higher-education setting.
  • Experience in space planning and/or campus planning for an institution of similar size and complexity.
  • Experience participating in or managing Master Planning initiatives.
  • Experience with a variety of software packages routinely used in written and graphic communication, including but not limited to Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe, Photoshop, InDesign and Bluebeam. Experience in the use of spreadsheets, presentation programs, and databases.
  • Experience with principles, methods, and best practices of space planning and management.
