Summary/Objective

The Director of Campaign Initiatives works closely with the Executive Director of Principal Gifts and Campaign Initiatives and other key program leaders to meet major goals of the Office of Development and Alumni Relations (DAR). Priority is given to high-level, strategic projects in support of the goals and priorities of the university’s comprehensive campaign, and the formulation and communication of principal and transformational funding concepts and donor strategies.

 

The director reports to the Executive Director, Principal Gifts and Campaign Initiatives, and collaborates with the Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations, the Assistant Vice President for Development, the Executive Director of Campaign Engagement, other members of the DAR staff, and leadership across the university as required to ensure the smooth execution of high-priority projects.

 

The director advances the conceptual development of strategic initiatives identified by leadership, particularly those focused on campaign themes and areas in which the university’s funding priorities and principal prospect/donor interests intersect. The director also works with leadership to conceptualize and articulate new academic, research, and educational projects that represent investment opportunities for donors and/or strategic opportunities for the institution. Leveraging the expertise of the faculty, departments, institutes, and schools, these investment concepts will relate both to societal/institutional imperatives and to the philanthropic objectives of the university. The director is responsible for project execution and project deliverables.

Work Environment

The director collaborates with a range of partners to create the highest-level campaign donor proposals, with special attention to complex interdisciplinary proposals that leverage the university’s strengths and that involve multiple stakeholders. With an emphasis on gift proposals at the $2.5M+ level, the director will support significant philanthropic attainment.

Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent
  • 5-8 years of relevant experience
  • Experience in higher education, with preference to a position that required coordination with campus leaders and a strategic role focused on organization-wide initiatives
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills, with a high attention to detail and demonstrated ability to write strategic communications and/or fundraising proposals
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to work collaboratively and effectively with team members and a diverse group of colleagues from across the institution
  • Knowledge of fundraising principles and donor strategy development, particularly in a higher-education setting and/or at the principal gift level
  • Experience working in highly matrixed organizations with multitudinal goals and numerous stakeholder profiles
  • Understanding of best practices in campaign strategy or, planning, and execution
  • Ability to research, collect data and provide analysis on various topics and distill complex concepts into engaging, donor-facing content
  • Excellent project management, planning, and leadership skills to help lead strategic initiatives across the university.
  • Innovative and analytical thinking with the demonstrated ability to prepare, implement and lead improvement initiatives
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple and competing projects and relationships concurrently.
  • Ability to create and format reports and presentations
  • Ability to identify short- and long-range goals of multiple departments and contribute to effective and measurable execution of outcomes
  • Knowledge of American University, the institution’s strengths and the university’s priorities to make connections with the strategic planning process
  • Understanding of graphic design principles and concepts
  • Familiarity with project management methodologies
