Summary/Objective

The Environmental Health and Safety Coordinator fosters a safe workplace environment by advancing environmental, health, and safety performance improvement in support of regulatory requirements and university policies.  

Essential Functions

  1. Perform laboratory and waste area safety inspections. Maintain certifications of emergency eyewash and shower equipment, fume hoods, snorkels, biosafety cabinets, and clean benches. Provide hazardous waste collection, storage, and disposal services in accordance with EPA, DOT, and OSHA regulations.
  2. Oversee the University’s chemical inventory program. Maintain online chemical inventory, inspection, training, and recordkeeping platforms.
  3. Assist in identification and mitigation of environmental, health, and safety issues. Interpret and implement safety and environmental regulations as they relate to the higher education setting.
  4. Advocate for a strong, positive safety culture across a diverse university population through facilitation of safety committee meetings, delivery of safety training, and planning of community outreach efforts. Provide exceptional customer service to the AU community, including positive and prompt responses to customer requests.
  5. Perform other duties as assigned.

Work Environment

  • This position requires working in an array of indoor and outdoor conditions in a variety of working environments.
  • The job may require entry into potentially hazardous environments for purposes of hazard evaluation, remedying of hazardous situations, or removing hazardous materials.  

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

  • Full-Time.
  • Non-Exempt.
  • Specialist A.
  • This is a hybrid position, working 3 days on campus and 2 days from home.

Salary Range

  • Commensurate with experience.

Required Education and Experience

  • Associate's degree environmental health, science, occupational health, or related field.
  • 1-3 years of relevant experience.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental health, science, occupational health, or related field.
  • Active designation as OHST or ASP.
  • Formal training in HAZWOPER, DOT/RCRA for Hazardous Waste, OSHA regulations, DOT hazardous materials shipper, asbestos, indoor air quality.
  • Experience developing and conducting in-person or online training programs.
  • Experience working in higher education and/or a laboratory setting.
  • Experience conducting regulatory or safety audits or inspections.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

  • Familiarity with OSHA, RCRA, TSCA and other safety standards.
  • Familiarity with database, spreadsheet, and word-processing computer software applications.
  • Basic understanding of chemical and biological classifications and hazards.
  • Ability to develop and present creative solutions to safety and compliance concerns.
  • Professional and self-motivated with strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to stand, lift and work in indoor and outdoor environments.
