Summary/Objective

The Assistant Community Director is a part-time staff position in Residence Life. This position offers an opportunity to support students through engaging directly with students, student staff, and student groups. The incumbent will be able to develop skills in implementing developmental programming and initiatives, advising student leaders, supporting departmental initiatives, supporting student in crisis or experiencing a crisis, emergency and incident management, and budget management. This position reports directly to the Assistant Director for Recruitment, Training & Leadership Programs and assists in the overall management and operational functions of the office of Residence Life.   
 
The Assistant Community Director serves as a member of the emergency response On-call rotation and requires after-hours, weekend, and summer response to student concerns. When a staff member is serving in the on-call rotation as a professional staff member, they are on call for the day through a duration of their tour. I.e., if a staff member is on-call for Monday, they are on call, and expected to be available to assist and provide support to our residential communities from Monday-the end of their tour on Tuesday. Due to the expectation of after-hours and weekend responsibilities, this position requires the individual to be available outside traditional work hours and to live in an on-campus apartment. The incumbent is expected to have 20-hours per week spread out through the duration of the week to ensure office availability daily. The incumbent will attend and participate in department and committee meetings; attend conferences, regular attendance at staff meetings and designated training/in-services is required. 

Essential Functions

  1. Recruitment, Training and Leadership Development:  At the direction of a Asst, Director, this position will assist in recruiting and training student staff and student leader positions within the department. Administrative responsibilities include coordination of all recruitment and training logistics.
  2. Student Advising: Guide student leaders in the development, planning, assessment, and implementation of community programming and initiatives. This position serves as the co-advisor to NRHH and RHA. Travel and attend regional, and national conferences as the advisor for the American University RHA/NRHH Delegation.  
  3. Administrative Support: Provide administrative support for Residence Life including opening and closing all residence halls, health & safety inspections, and residential verifications. Regularly attend and participate in department and committee meetings; attendance at staff meetings and designated training/in-services is required. 
  4. On-Call Emergency Response/ After Hours Responsibilities: Serve in the professional staff on-call rotation providing emergency/crisis response to the residential population. Respond to a variety of student needs and coordinate response network within the department, as well as with other university departments. Provide assistance with after hours and weekend room assignment, staff selection, and staff training programs.  Provide follow up/after care for incidents involving students. Utilize Case management software to provide administrative support to the residence life case management process.  
  5. Non-Essential Functions: Committee Assignments: Serve on various committees within the department as assigned.
  6. Other Duties: Other duties as assigned.

  • There are no supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment & Key Roles

  • The Assistant Community Director provides support in key areas within the residential life operation to ensure a smooth and high impact residential program.
  • This position will provide support in areas specific to recruitment, training, follow up care/case management, advising, leadership development, and engagement for residential student leaders.
  • Duties include, but are not limited to: supporting hall council(s), RHA, and NRHH, supporting area-wide programs, supporting recruitment processes, following up with students of concern/students in crisis, serving on committees, providing administrative support to residence life, assessing programming initiatives, and assisting with the coordination of various administrative functions, including opening and closing all residence halls, health & safety inspections, residential verifications, emergency and incident management, and policy enforcement. Housing & Compensation

  • This position has a live-on requirement and non-traditional business hours. Flexibility is required to be successful in this position. Attendance at campus functions, student programs and initiatives, and after-hours emergency response is required.  
  • The incumbent should have an active interest in the development of students in their personal and academic pursuits.  
  • The compensation package for this position includes an air-conditioned, furnished, on-campus apartment with all utilities paid (electricity, cable, internet access).

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required; current enrollment in a Higher Education, College Student Personnel, or other graduate program in the DMV area preferred. 
  • Previous experience with or participation in peer advising, residence life, student organizations, or student leadership preferred. 
  • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills. 
  • The ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment.
  • Must live in provided campus housing.
  • Must be available during non-traditional business hours, weekends, and evenings given operational needs.  
  • Must be available to work hours daily from 9:00am-5:00pm. 
  • Must be available to attend weekly professional staff meetings.  
  • Must be available to attend weekly Hall Council, RHA and NRHH meetings and programs.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Previous experience with or participation in peer advising, residence life, student organizations, or student leadership preferred.
