About the Department/Unit

American University’s Athletics Departments features Recreational Sports and Fitness (RecFit) that offer gym memberships, intramural and club sports, group exercise classes, wellness programs, and personal training. 
 
RecFit Personal Training is comprised of three tiers: Student Personal Trainers, Professional Personal Trainers, and Master Personal Trainers, all of whom report to the Personal Training Coordinator.

Summary/Objective

American University Recreational Sports and Fitness is seeking qualified Part-Time Personal Trainers for its growing member-based personal training program. Part-Time Personal Trainers are responsible for providing members with fitness assessments and exercise programs that are safe and effective. Part-Time Personal Trainers will work with clients to reach their health and fitness goals. Part-Time Personal Trainers will also participate in various health and fitness programs, events, and promotions the personal training program holds across the University. Applicants must be energetic and outgoing with a passion for health and fitness in addition to having experience in personal training. Candidates must hold a nationally recognized personal training certification. Current CPR/AED certification is also required.

Essential Functions

RecFit Personal Trainers are part-time positions that help members progress and achieve personal goals in health, fitness, and/or performance through one-on-one, and/or small group instruction.

RecFit Personal Trainers administer detailed fitness assessment for members, design effective training programs based on individual needs and goals, teach proper exercise form and technique, assist with department projects, lead special events for members, help promote programs and services, and offer responsible advice and appropriate instruction in private or small group training sessions.

Salary Range

RecFit Personal Trainers are compensated based on education, experience, and skills. The compensation rate ranges as follows for the three tiers of training: Part-Time Student Personal Trainers range from $20-30 per session, Part-Time Professional Trainer range from $30-60 per session, and Part-Time Master Personal Trainer range from $40-95 per session.

Required Education and Experience

  • RecFit Personal Trainers are required to have a current certification in personal training and CPR/AED. No previous experience is necessary, but preferred.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Experience in athletics, group exercise and previous leadership roles as well as NCCA accredited certifications in personal trainer are preferred.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

  • Additional degrees, certifications, and experience are preferred but not required.

  • All RecFit Personal Trainers are expected to be professional and act in accordance with the AU’s principles of conduct, inclusivity, and respect.

  • Hiring offers for this position are contingent on successful completion of a background check.
  • Employees in staff positions at American University must deliver their services to the university from either the District of Columbia, Maryland, or Virginia, or perform work on-site at the university.
