Public Safety Aides (PSAs) assist the University Police with parking enforcement, office work, traffic direction, and special events. This is an exceptional opportunity to have a summer job without the need to be affiliated with American University.

Essential Functions

The primary responsibilities of this position include:
  1. Enforcing parking policies on all campus properties.

  2. Providing excellent customer service to all campus community members and guests.

  3. Maintaining consistent communication with supervisors via radio and phone.

  4. Positively representing the PSA program, Parking and Commuter Services, the American University Police Department, and the University as a whole.

  5. Providing support to the American University Police Department, when necessary, often during special events such as Commencement or Move-In.

  6. Following PSA policies/procedures and the directions of supervisory staff.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

  • 9 hours/week; more hours are available during the summer months.
  • You must be available during the hours of 8am-8pm, Monday through Friday.

Salary Range

  • $17.00-$19.00/hour, to commensurate with experience.

Required Education and Experience

  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to walk and stand for extended periods of time.
  • Successfully complete all new hire paperwork and pass initial training.
  • For individuals NOT affiliated with American University.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Experience with iPhone-based applications and handheld radios.
  • Ability to handle challenging situations.
