The part time roll-off truck driver supports the campus’ waste and recycling program. This driver will support the success of the campus Zero Waste program by providing high quality, detailed, collections to the campus waste system. Safety, caution, and patience are essential and required for drivers working on campus to ensure the safety of campus users. The position also requires the responsibility of ensuring high quality data from any waste disposal facilities and sharing data with the Zero Waste Manager daily.


The driver operates a 25-ft roll-off truck, carrying 24-ft. plus open top container and dumpster or any other university owned or leased vehicle in a safe and efficient manner in accordance with the U.S. Dept. of Transportation (USDOT) Federal Highway Administration (FHWA)’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR) Parts 382, 383, 387, 390-397, 399, and 40 with specific instructions without detailed or continuous supervision incurring additional responsibilities as needed. Must have at least two years’ experience driving a commercial vehicle with a weight of 10,000 plus pounds.

Essential Functions

  1. Operates a 25-foot roll-off truck, carrying 24ft plus open top container/dumpster or university owned or leased vehicle in a safe manner pursuant to the USDOT-FHWA’s FMCSR Parts 390-397, and 399, while utilizing prescribed standards for operating handicapped lifts, air brakes, and emergency equipment to transport members of the University in a safe manner. Be the primary driver of the campus’ roll-off and hook trucks. Transport all campus waste streams to the proper disposal facilities to include recycling, landfill, compost, yard waste, and construction and demolition debris. Help ensure all dumpster locations are cleaned and swept when dumpsters are moved. Notify manager of any issues with contamination of waste streams with included photos. Communicate with the Supervisor, Recycling Associates, to schedule the emptying of containers and cleaning schedules. Complete daily safety checks of equipment and vehicles. Assist with waste infrastructure maintenance and inspections.
  2. Conducts daily regular maintenance and service checks of the transit buses or any other University owned or leased vehicle pursuant to USDOT-FHWA’s FMCSR Parts 392, 393, and 396, while communicating vehicle problems to the Supervisor of Shuttle Operations and other members of the University, when required.
  3. Participates in various activities and training to enhance organizational effectiveness within the University with a primary focus on adherence to university personnel policies and procedures. Displays awareness and knowledge of transit-related issues and keeps abreast of these issues via training and professional development opportunities. This position must satisfactorily complete the required training workshops (ex. Disability Awareness, Substance Abuse Awareness and the Anti-Drug Policy, Wheelchair Lift and Securement Techniques, Shuttle Operator Training).
  4. Reports all accidents, incidents, unusual occurrences, and any other matters that could affect the University to the Zero Waste Manager and Public Safety. Completion and submission of administrative reports (i.e., route manifests, vehicle inspection, attendance and leave, accident, incident, etc.)

  • Part-Time.
  • Coordinator/Analyst B.
  • Non-Exempt.
  • This position works from 4am-9am Monday-Friday and 6am-8am Saturday.
  • Note: These hours are subject to change based on events and university.

Salary Range

  • Commensurate with experience.

Required Education and Experience

  • High school diploma/GED or equivalent in training and/or experience.
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience.
  • Must be able to effectively manage time and should have good communications skills.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

  • 2+ years of experience driving roll-off trucks.
  • Pre-employment controlled substance testing, as prescribed by DOT.
  • Possession of a valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) Class B with air brake endorsements issued by the jurisdiction in which the individual resides.
  • A clean driving record with no more than 2 points; moving violations, suspensions, or revocations of a driver’s permit because of a moving traffic violation within the 36 months preceding appointment.
  • Strong interest in helping build a new waste program at American University.
