The Psychiatric Health Practitioner provides psychiatric healthcare services to American University students within the scope of practice of a Nurse Practitioner licensed by the DC Board of Nursing. The practitioner serves as a resource to Student Health Center staff on best patient care practices, and collaborates extensively with the Office of the Dean of Students, Counseling Center, and other campus partners to educate the campus community on psychiatric care. The practitioner participates in weekly case conference meetings with clinicians in the university’s Counseling Center to ensure effective coordination of care.

Work Environment

  • This position reports directly to the Medical Director along with one psychiatrist, four advanced practice clinicians and two nurses
  • The Psychiatric Health Practitioner is one of two providers of psychiatric services in the Student Health Center, and routinely sees 10-15 patients per day
  • The Practitioner performs psychiatric consultations, medication management and initiates treatment which lie within the nurse practitioner’s scope of practice 
  • This position provides, prescribes, coordinates, delegates and evaluates patient care in collaboration with SHC clinical staff and the AU Counseling Center

Salary Range

  • Commensurate with experience

Required Education and Experience

  • Current licensure (or license-eligible) in the District of Columbia as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner
  • National Certification as a Family Psychiatric Mental Health Practitioner
  • At least 3 years of clinical experience as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner in a treatment setting
  • Eligibility for DEA registration
  • Ability to discuss medical information with patients in an understandable manner with a high degree of tact. 
  • Proven ability to work across organizational boundaries as an effective member of a team
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to manage multiple, competing priorities; demonstrated computer proficiency including personal productivity software and electronic medical record systems; strong analytical skills; and excellent communication skills
  • Must have highest standards of integrity and ethics in both performance and behavior
  • Desire and appreciation for work in a diverse, fast-paced environment

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Prior experience in college health

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

  • This is a 10-month position, 35/hours per week
