Summary/Objective

The Regional Assistant Director of Admissions is responsible for the admission and recruitment of domestic freshman and transfer applicants including recruitment travel as well as application evaluation.  This position is based in and responsible for recruiting throughout Southern California. The Assistant Director is responsible for the coordination and staffing of its regional events and managing online events for prospective students.
This position reports directly to the Associate Director of Admissions and requires minimal supervision.

Essential Functions

  1. Planning and Implementation: Plan and implement marketing and recruitment efforts in assigned regional. This includes the development and execution of a comprehensive, integrated plan for both fall and spring travel/visits/events each year based on results of prior year’s activities, annual goals and changing demographics of both the region and American University. Determines which events to attend and develops new recruitment opportunities in his/her territory.
  2. Admissions Evaluation and Decision Making: Reads and evaluates applications for undergraduate admission to select candidates for admission based on admissions best practices and understanding of a best-fit candidate for American University.  Makes final decision to admit or deny applicants; refers some highly complex or sensitive cases with a recommendation to either the Associate Director or Assistant Vice Provost for Undergraduate Admissions.  These decisions and recommendations impact the size, composition and overall academic profile of the enrolled class.
  3. Communication and Information Dissemination: Participate in campus-based activities at least twice per year. This may include all-staff trainings and on-campus events. Virtually participate in weekly all-staff meetings that pertain to the work of the office.  Virtually participate in other trainings and updates throughout the year.
  4. Finalizes airline, hotel, and car rental reservations for travel and completes expense reports.     

Work Environment

  • Evening and weekend work required.
  • Travel consists of six to eight weeks in the fall and spring combined.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 1-3 years of relevant experience, at least 2 years of professional experience in admissions or related areas.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Master's degree
  • Proficiency in a foreign language, preferably Spanish
  • Knowledge of trends and practices in higher education.
  • Writing ability.
  • Ability to represent the University and demonstrate highly developed interpersonal and public speaking skills
  • Demonstrated problem solving ability. 
  • Computer skills. 
  • Organizational skills and ability to conduct demographic and historical research as it pertains to American University’s applicant trends.
  • Ability to contribute to a team-oriented environment within the Office of Enrollment.
