Working independently, this position is responsible for designing and conducting research on a variety of issues of critical importance to the institution.  Using expertise in data analytics, produces qualitative and quantitative analysis of data. Develops, implements and maintains statistical software programs and the Business Intelligence system to generate statistical and other management reports used by a variety of audiences such as the Cabinet, academic deans, directors, department chairs, assessment coordinators, and the general campus community Provides leadership on the development and use of Business Intelligence. Represents OIRA in decisions about BI training, support and data integrity.
Works with the Assistant Provost, Associate Director, Senior Research Analyst, and the other OIRA staff.

Essential Functions

  1. Business Intelligence:
    Works with OIT and others to create and maintain a BI infrastructure that serves Academic Affairs.  Responsible for developing and maintaining a BI version of AU’s official statistics (such as in the Academic Data Reference Book.) Supports completion of external reports, such as Federally-mandated IPEDs reports, using Business Intelligence. Works independently, and in a team, to ensure the usefulness, consistency, and accuracy of reports. Works across the institution on issues related to data accuracy and data governance.  Is customer service oriented, assisting with BI training and in ensuring that BI meets user needs.
  2. Reportings:
    Designs and develops reports intended to convey institutional information to senior university management, the campus community, and external constituents (including select federally mandated reports.) Organizes data into tables using Excel. Develops visualizations of data using Microstrategy, Tableau or other visualization software. Integrates narratives, tabular data, and graphics to effectively communicate current status, and trends, on issues of importance to the university. Provides insight and analysis into trends. Creates necessary programs, databases, Business Intelligence reports and analysis in order to produce these reports and studies. Presents information on the OIRA website. Reports may be used for a variety of high-level initiatives, including advancement of the Strategic Plan and AU accreditation.

Essential Functions Continued

  1. Special Projects:
    Undertakes special research and other projects in support of institutional planning and policy making. This includes responsibility for supporting work on the university’s accreditation process. Such support includes developing and organizing data/information for the university’s self-study. Collects and helps report information regarding the university’s strategic plan and other important initiatives. Assists with workshops and presentations conducted by OIRA staff.  
  2. Student Evaluation of Teaching Support:
    Assists with the administration, support and reporting of the Student Evaluation of Teaching. This includes being capable of using the current evaluation software to ensure that evaluations are designed correctly, sent to students, and administered properly.
  3. General Support of OIRA initiatives:
    Works in a team environment to support the general work of the office. Examples include assisting the Assistant Provost with work on assessment of student learning and helping to update the OIRA website.

Salary Range

  • Commensurate with experience.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in a data or research-oriented/analytic field (i.e. social sciences, research methodology, data analytics or related discipline).
  • One year of experience working in an office or research-oriented environment.
  • Experience or training in social science research methods, data analysis, or using a business intelligence reporting system.
  • Demonstrated experience with spreadsheets.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Master's degree or equivalent.
  • Graduate level work in a data or research-oriented/analytic field (i.e. business analytics, research methodology, higher education or the social sciences preferred).
  • Two+ years of work experience in data analysis, business intelligence, assessment or evaluation.
  • Experience in the field of higher education institutional research or in higher education data analysis.
  • Demonstrated experience with data visualization products (e.g. Tableau).
  • Advanced experience with spreadsheets (e.g. Excel).
  • Training and experience in the use of Business Intelligence (especially Power BI).
  • Experience working in a higher education setting.
  • Knowledge and experience working with American University data.
