The Research Fellow in The Center for Teaching, Research, and Learning (CTRL) will explore issues related to program evaluation and impact assessment for equity, diversity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives in higher education. The Research Fellow will support CTRL, in partnership with the Assistant Vice President for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, in all aspects of research — grant seeking, proposal writing, research design, data collection, analysis, and dissemination of findings — that focus on evaluating the outcomes and impact of American University’s DEI initiatives as outlined in AU’s Inclusive Excellence Plan, including inclusive teaching, antiracist curriculum, and faculty development. The Research Fellow will also work collaboratively with faculty and staff in CTRL and administrators in the Office of Campus Life and Inclusive Excellence to help coordinate and manage related special projects, and may also supervise graduate or undergraduate students. As part of the fellowship, the incumbent will also receive career development and mentoring support to develop their personal research that align with the broad goals of CTRL and AU’s DEI initiatives.

Essential Functions

1. Research:
  • Conducts research and analysis on AU’s DEI initiatives related to teaching and learning,, and more generally, on impact assessment for teaching and learning efforts for diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education.
  • Activities may include but are not limited to: grant seeking, research design, data collection and analysis, conducting interviews, and presenting original research.
  • Develop and purse other research questions focused on the scholarship of teaching and learning in higher education.
2. Project Management & Administrative Support:
  • Provides project management and administrative support for the related activities and events of the research team and the Office of Campus Life and Inclusive Excellence, including organizing workshops, grant preparation, and dissemination of material online.
  • Collaborates with other staff in CTRL in the design, development, and implementation of faculty development activities, especially related to DEI.

Supervisory Responsibility

  • May supervise graduate or undergraduate students.

Work Environment

  • Fellowship start date in January of 2022 is flexible and will run for a one-year term, with the possibility of renewal for a second year.
  • Occasional travel may be required to support these activities, including travel to conferences and public policy forums.

Salary Range

  • $52,000 to $62,000

Required Education and Experience

  • PhD or equivalent terminal degree in a relevant field prior to the date of hire.
  • 2-4 years of relevant experience (experience conducting research in the context of graduate study can be used to meet the years of experience requirement).

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Prior experience conducting research/assisting with research about issues related to diversity and inclusion, and educational equity in higher education.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

  • Ability to independently plan, conduct research protocols, analyze research data, and prepare it for presentation and/or publication.
  • Familiarity and experience with data collection and statistical analyses including the use of common research and statistical software packages.
  • Experience conducting original research and transforming it into actionable insights and plans.
  • Experience with recruiting and interviewing research participants.
  • Cultural competence and the ability to build effective relationships with diverse populations.
  • Excellent communications and interpersonal skills, including public speaking and presentations.
  • Strong writing skills and the ability to convey complex ideas clearly and concisely for a variety of audiences.
