Summary/Objective

Responsible for assisting with the prevention, care, evaluation, rehabilitation and treatment of acute and chronic orthopedic and medical conditions related to participation in intercollegiate athletics. Assisting the Head Athletic Trainer with providing comprehensive health care for 250 student-athletes and aiding in the day to day administration of the American University Sports Medicine program. This position works under the supervision of the Head Athletic Trainer and Team Physicians.

Essential Functions

  1. Attends athletic events and practices, both home and away to prepare athletes for contests and practices. Responsible for the application of protective and supportive bracing and padding. Assures safety of playing area and available on site at events in case of injury.
  2. Makes initial evaluation of injuries and provides immediate care to injured athletes to determine extent of injury and need for further follow-up medical care. Develops and supervises rehabilitation programs for both minor and long term injuries.
  3. Administers and supervises the use of therapeutic modalities for the purpose of conditioning and reconditioning athletes and athletic injuries. Modalities include whirlpools, electric simulation, ultrasound, hydroculators, cold pack & other cryo-therapy treatments; which are administered under consent from team physician.
  4. Administration of the training room to ensure that the facility runs smoothly: maintains accurate injury and treatment records, tracks inventory; cleans and maintains modalities; cleans, maintains and restocks treatment and taping areas; supervises hourly work study students.
  5. Processes and documents the handling of insurance claims on behalf of student-athletes for services related to injuries and illnesses directly related to participation in intercollegiate athletics for American University. This involves direct communication with our team physicians, the student-athlete’s primary insurance provider(s) and outside medical provider(s).
  6. Maintains athletic training knowledge through regular attendance at conferences and symposium, regularly reading scholarly articles and journals relevant to the field of athletic training and through continuing research in field of athletic training.

Salary Range

  • Commensurate with experience 

 

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training or related field
  • BOC Inc. Certification and CPR/AED Certification

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Master’s degree
  • Experience working at the NCAA Division-I level
  • Experience working with college athletics

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

  • Successful completion of pre-employment background check required
  • This position requires travel and a considerable time above regular daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly University work schedule requirements
