Part-time Athletic Trainer

Summary/Objective

Responsible for assisting with the prevention, care, evaluation, rehabilitation and treatment of acute and chronic orthopedic and medical conditions related to participation in intercollegiate athletics. Assisting the Head Athletic Trainer with providing comprehensive health care for 250 student-athletes and aiding in the day to day administration of the American University Sports Medicine program. This position works under the supervision of the Head Athletic Trainer and Team Physicians.

Essential Functions

  1. Attends athletic events and practices, both home and away to prepare athletes for contests and practices. Responsible for the application of protective and supportive bracing and padding. Assures safety of playing area and available on site at events in case of injury.
  2. Makes initial evaluation of injuries and provides immediate care to injured athletes to determine extent of injury and need for further follow-up medical care. Develops and supervises rehabilitation programs for both minor and long term injuries. Communicates with team physician, administrators and respective sport head coaches as to the status and progress of injured student-athlete’s
  3. Administers & supervises use of therapeutic modalities for the purpose of conditioning and reconditioning athletes and athletic injuries. Modalities include: whirlpools, electric simulation, ultrasound, hydroculators, cold pack & other cryo-therapy treatments; they are administered under consent from team physician.
  4. Administration of the training room to ensure that the facility runs smoothly: maintains accurate injury and treatment records; cleans and maintains modalities; cleans, maintains and restocks treatment and taping areas; supervises hourly work study students.
  5. Processing and documenting the handling of insurance claims on behalf of student-athletes for services related to injuries and illnesses directly related to participation in intercollegiate athletics for American University. This involves direct communication with our team physicians, the student-athlete’s primary insurance provider(s) and outside medical provider(s).
  6. In the absence of the Head Athletic Trainer this positions is responsible for the supervision of the facility, responding to requests for service and coordination of staff.
  7. Inventory Management: documenting receipt of supplies ordered, tracking of levels of supplies on hand, alerting Head Athletic Trainer when ordering becomes necessary.
  8. Maintains athletic training knowledge through regular attendance at conferences and symposium, regularly reading scholarly articles and journals relevant to the field of athletic training and through continuing research in field of athletic training.

Supervisory Responsibility

  • Direct supervision of not less than 2 varsity teams; provide care for 250 student athletes

Work Environment

  • This position reports directly to the Head Athletic Trainer.
  • Assisting the Head Athletic Trainer in providing comprehensive health care for 250 student-athletes. This care involves injury prevention, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

  • Part time

Salary Range

  • $35-$40 hourly

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training or related field, BOC Inc.
  • Certification and CPR/AED Certification are required.
  • Successful completion of pre-employment background check required.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Experience working at the NCAA Division-I level preferred.
  • Experience working with college athletics preferred.
