About the Department/Unit

The Katzen Arts Center is home to the Visual Art, Music, Dance, and Theater departments at American University. Our responsibilities are to keep everything running smoothly and without incident. Wether that be ensuring classrooms are appropriately set up, assisting others with technical questions, or recording live performances for posterity. 

Essential Functions

This position includes providing logistical and operational support for internal and external clientele, ranging from the recording and mixing of events to troubleshooting and maintenance of classroom A/V systems. This role also provides general office and technical support to direct supervisor and building management.

Assist in day-to-day operations regarding Audio Visual systems and troubleshooting, including but not limited to:

  1. Computers
  2. Projectors
  3. Speakers/sound systems
  4. Stage setup/tear down
  5. Concert recording
  6. Live Streaming
  7. Other various tasks as needed

Work Environment

  • Techs will operate within the Katzen Arts Center, and occasionally the museum as needed. 

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

  • Part-time position (Student).
  • Up to 20 hours/week.

Required Education and Experience

  • Open to American University graduate students.
  • Experience troubleshooting Audio Visual (AV) components (e.g. projectors, computers, etc.).
  • Basic knowledge of signal flow.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Graduate students from the Audio Technology program or with an audio tech background are highly recommended to apply.
  • Knowledge and experience of setup and operation of live audio systems.
  • Comprehension of basic microphone techniques and placement.
