Circulation and Course Reserves Student Assistant

Summary/Objective

The Circulation and Course Reserves Student Assistant supports the operations of the Circulation and Course Reserves Desk and helps maintain the organization of the Library’s collections including but not limited to, the stacks, periodicals, newspapers, microfiche, and reserves. The assistant may also be asked to provide desk and stacks services at the Curriculum Materials Center (CMC) in the Spring Valley Building, room 418.   

 

At the Circulation and Course Reserves service point, the primary responsibilities of this position include:

  • Checking library materials out and in
  • Providing preliminary reference assistance
  • Processing books and course reserves
  • Educating patrons on how to use resources such as AU Library Search and their online library accounts
  • Maintaining patron records and providing patrons with the status of requests
  • Assisting professors to place materials on course reserves
  • Collecting fines and fees and helping patrons with issues related to their accounts


While working in Stacks, the primary responsibilities of this position include:

  • Shelving, retrieving, shifting, and transporting books and other materials
  • Scanning the shelves for misplaced books and keeping the stacks organized
  • Performing inventory and other collection-related projects
  • Assisting patrons to locate books in the stacks and enforcing policy while working in public areas

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

  • Federal Work Study (FWS) required
  • Minimum of 12 hours per week

Salary Range

  • $13.25/hour

Required Education and Experience

Educational Requirements:

  • High school diploma or its equivalent

Minimum Requirements:

  • High level of honesty and integrity, with excellent customer service, organization, communication, and problem solving skills
  • Strong attention to detail, ability to handle monetary transactions as well as prioritize and multi-task in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to lift books and push carts of up to 50 pounds
  • Commitment of at least 12 hours minimum per week
  • Availability is required when filling out this application

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Familiarity with the Library of Congress call number system
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel and multi-line phone systems
