Development Graduate Assistant

Summary/Objective

The Office of Development and Alumni Relations seeks a highly motivated and organized graduate student to assist in development efforts for the School of Public Affairs. Students interested in gaining experience in the field of development, including working with alumni, event and trip planning, and assisting with fundraising projects are encouraged to apply for this position. Typical assignments for this position will include:

  • Analyzing data in Excel spreadsheets, conducting prospect research, and creating briefings for prospect visits;
  • Supporting donor outreach and stewardship, including preparing communications and tracking activities;
  • Assisting with event planning, including managing RSVPs and providing day-of event assistance, and trip planning for the development team;
  • General administrative duties, including data entry, filing, record keeping, and mailing preparation;

Work Environment

  • Currently, he/she will work remotely, but will ultimately report to the American University Office of Development and Alumni Relations at 4401 Connecticut Avenue, 5th Floor (across from the Van Ness Metro).

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

  • This is a part time (approx. 15 hours per week) position for the academic school year and during the summer months (as available). 

Salary Range

  • Starting at $15/hr and up.

Required Education and Experience

  • Minimum requirements for this position are the ability to work independently with minimal supervision, strong communication and research skills, and proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • The Student Assistant must be currently enrolled in a degree program at American University.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Applicants with previous experience in fundraising for non-profit groups or organizations are preferred.
