General Description

The Event and Office Assistant for the Office of Graduate and Professional Studies (OGPS) will support the programming initiatives and day-to-day operations of the office. This includes providing in-person support for events, coverage for the intake desk in the OGPS suite (4th floor, Spring Valley Building), and support of the Dean of Graduate and Professional Studies.

Position Requirements & Expectations

Student will assist OGPS staff with the following:
  • Support for OGPS programs like workshops, town halls, and other graduate-focused events. This includes:
    • Representing OGPS at events and serving as a primary point of contact for attendee questions or feedback
    • Greeting speakers or presenters and ensuring they have what they need
    • Collective attendance information for tracking purposes
  • Coverage of the intake desk in the OGPS suite, including:
    • Greeting visitors to the office
    • Communicating with them to understand the purpose of their visit
    • Coordinating with staff in the office to address visitor need
  • Perform other related duties as assigned. 

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

  • Student job
  • A minimum of 10 hours/week but a maximum of 20 hours/week.

Educational Requirements

  • Must be a current graduate student at American University enrolled in an academic program. 

Minimum Requirements

  • The student assistant must remain in good academic and disciplinary standing with AU and be able to effectively perform the duties of the position, including pre-scheduled evening or weekend hours.   
  • Proficiency with Outlook and Microsoft Office products.

Salary Range

  • $16.50/hour.
