About the Department/Unit
Summary/Objective
FWS students will assist the Managing Director of the Center for Israel Studies in implementing the projects and programs planned for the academic year. Students who are looking to gain non-profit work experience and have an interest in Israel, international affairs, or public relations are encouraged to apply. Job responsibilities may include substantive work such as research, editing, and data analysis, as well as event planning and execution (20+ events per year), and administrative work.
Essential Functions
- Students must be dependable, organized, skilled at working with Microsoft Word and Excel, and comfortable representing American University and the Center at public events. Prior office experience is helpful.
- We are looking for a few organized, conscientious student interns to help with the Center for Israel Studies extensive calendar of cultural, political and scholarly events.
- Job responsibilities include substantive work such as research and editing, as well as event planning and administrative work.
- Some students will be tasked with graphics/social media roles so those skills are helpful, as well as photography skills.
Supervisory Responsibility

Students will be supervised by the Managing Director of the Center for Israel Studies.
Work Environment

Students will either work in the CIS office during office hours or at events (some are evening) and should feel comfortable working as part of a team. There is a strong sense of camaraderie among the work/study team.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This position is only open to students with an active and available Federal Work Study Award, able to work 5-10 hours per week.

Positions start at the beginning of the fall 2022 semester and continue throughout the academic year, Hours for this position are flexible and will include evening event support.

Salary Range

$16.25-$16.50/hour, commensurate with experience
Required Education and Experience

High school diploma
Preferred Education and Experience

Work/study interns must have good oral and written communication skills and be able to effectively use Microsoft Word and Excel.

Desirable skills include social media/graphic design (we do event marketing fliers using Canva), and photography skills.

Catering experience is also helpful.
