LGBTQ Support Programs Graduate Assistant

Summary/Objective

The Center for Diversity & Inclusion (CDI) is seeking a graduate student to provide support to the Center’s educational programs and training initiatives.

Expectations/ Responsibilities

  • Design and facilitate trans & non-binary affinity programs
  • Cultivate LGBTQ community engagement online
  • Plan, implement and evaluate community building, personal and social identity development, academic support, and programs for LGBTQ students
  • Develop initiatives to engage the campus community on the intersection of race, gender, and sexuality
  • Draft bi-weekly LGBTQ newsletter in consultation with Coordinator, LGBTQ+ Support & Diversity Programs
  • Assist with providing LGBTQ resource support and connect students with appropriate resources on and off-campus
  • Collaborate with student organizations and Coordinator to develop student programs and trainings
  • Research, benchmark, and assess other campus’ educational & support programs
  • Provide administrative support for & during Center’s programs and operations to admit participants, track attendance, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned with general office tasks

Qualifications

  • Strong facilitation skills with the ability to train, present, and navigate conversations about queer and trans/non-binary identities & experiences
  • Knowledge of and experience with LGBTQ, gender expression, and identity-based programs and services
  • Excellent interpersonal communications skills (written and verbal) with attention to inclusive language
  • Strong organization skills to effectively manage multiple priorities with impeccable attention to detail
  • Self-reflective of one’s own social identities and implications with the ability to assist others in examining theirs
  • Knowledgeable of multi-layered aspects of identity, including ability, race, religious belief and practice, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, racial identity, and ethnicity.
  • Works well with diverse students, staff, and faculty on collaborative projects
  • Ability to provide program recommendations based on students’ needs
  • Critical thinker and innovative problem solver
  • Ability to take initiative independently and as part of a team
  • Flexibility and creativity
  • Proficient in social media platforms, including but not limited to Facebook, Instagram, Twitter

Experience

  • Experience with academic, social, cultural, and identity-based programs and services
  • Previous teaching, training, and/or event planning experience is recommended
  • Previous administrative experience
  • Experience with Microsoft Office; website development; able to learn new programs; and comfortable with technology

Position Type/ Expected Hours of Work

  • This position works up to 20 hours per week, occasional evenings, some weekends, and is required to conduct trainings.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree and enrollment in an American University graduate program for the 2021-2022 academic year (AU graduate students enrolling Fall 2021 can apply).

Salary

  • $16 per hour
