Summary/Objective

The part time Operations Student Assistant staffs the Information Desk and ensures the security and well-being of library patrons, employees, and the library collection by monitoring conditions and activities throughout the library, enforcing library policies, providing information to Library visitors and responding to emergency situations. This position also provides first-line technology and computer application support for personal computers, Library audiovisual equipment, as well as public computers and printers in the Library. In addition, the incumbent has a general supervisory role over part-time student assistants at the Information desk, Graduate Research Center, Printing Services, and Receiving Room.

 

Essential Functions

The primary responsibilities of this position include:

  • Patrolling all floors of the library to enforce library policies and maintain a comfortable and inviting learning environment
  • Providing application level support and first-line technological troubleshooting for public computers and public network printers
  • Serving as courier for the Library making deliveries to other offices
  • Providing customer service to library patrons at the Information desk
  • Opening and closing the building to library users and controlling staff entrance into the building before the library’s opening hours
  • Supervise and train part time students

Required Education and Experience

Educational Requirements:

  • At least two years of college

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • Ability to be assertive, exercise sound judgment and to recognize and resolve problems.
  • Prior customer service experience in a professional setting and the ability to work independently.
  • Excellent communication skills, and intermediate knowledge of computer hardware and software.
  • Extensive knowledge of productivity software applications, the Library of Congress classification system, the online catalog, and the operations of all Library service desks.  

 

 

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Some managerial experience and/or prior library experience. 
  • General knowledge of campus and library facilities and locations is helpful. 
  • Previous supervisory and training experience.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

  • This position is considered “essential” in the event of University closings, and the incumbent must assist in emergencies and be prepared to staff all public service desks in case of staff shortage.
  • This position requires the ability to work on weekends and between the hours of 11:00 am to 6:30pm and from 8:30am to 8:30pm Monday through Thursday and Friday from 8:30am and 6:30pm.
  • The position also requires flexibility, as schedules vary from semester to semester and during breaks and inter-session.
