About the Department/Unit

The Academic Support and Access Center (ASAC) supports the academic development and educational goals of all American University students and is committed to promoting access for individuals with disabilities within the university's diverse community.

Essential Functions

  1. Support individualized academic plans created by Student-Athlete Support Program (SASP) staff in a supervised study hall session with a specific case load of student-athletes.
  2. Monitor the student-athletes' academic progress each session.
  3. Maintain detailed notes outlining what student-athletes accomplished in the supervised study hall period, updating SASP staff appropriately.
  4. Assist student-athletes in developing effective study skills and academic habits in the areas of time management, study strategies, critical reading skills, note-taking, test-taking, etc.
  5. Recommend and assist student-athletes in obtaining and utilizing campus resources (Tutoring, Writing Center, Math & Stat Lab, Library, faculty office hours, etc.).
  6. Meet weekly with supervisor (Assistant Director, Student-Athlete Support Program).
  7. Provide support to SASP projects, as needed.
  8. Other duties as assigned.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

  • Fall 2022 and Spring 2023 Semesters, 15-20 hours a week.

Required Education and Experience

  • Currently enrolled American University degree-seeking graduate student.
  • Excellent writing, speaking, and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment and meet established work deadlines
  • Familiarity with academic skills development (time management, study strategies, critical reading skills, etc).
  • Familiarity with basic computer skills (Microsoft Office, etc.).

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Knowledge of and prior work experience in academic support or education
  • Teaching or academic tutoring experience in a one-on-one or group setting
