The Career Center is a bustling office full of opportunity for part-time student employees. Students work alongside nearly 30 full-time staff members and help to deliver career services and resources to thousands of AU students and alumni. Many student employees remain employed with the Career Center year after year and eventually go on to land high quality internships, national scholarships, and great full-time jobs after graduation.

Description

Calling all AU Students: Do you consider yourself or aspire to be a social media guru? Do you enjoy researching?  Do you have excellent attention to detail and time management skills?  If so, this position may be right for you.
 
The Career Center’s SOC Team Assistant provides support to a 2-person team of SOC Career Advisors; collaborates with another FWS employee; identifies content for the SOC student weekly newsletter; develops strategies and manages the @AU_SOCCareers Twitter through TweetDeck and Bitly; adds content to our Canvas Course and updates various handouts.  Day and/or evening event assistance may be requested 3-5 times per semester to support the team during the dean’s internship reception, presentations or the job and internship fair.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Compile lists of SOC events, jobs and internships for the weekly electronic newsletter, the SOC Student Newsletter.
  • Manage the social media outreach to students of the School of Communication through TweetDeck (typically posting to Twitter) and creating links through Bitly.
  • Utilize Canva to create graphics for Twitter.
  • Update Canvas resources on a as needed basis.
  • Conduct research on a range of communication disciplines and career paths to help advisors create new resources for students.
  • Collect data on SOC student employment/internships.
  • Assist with creating online materials and with logistics for SOC Team events and programs such as the AU Job and Internship Fair, SOC Mentoring orientation and The Intensives (Los Angeles and New York).
  • Serve as a student representative of the Career Center and collaborate closely with School of Communication faculty, staff and student groups across campus as part of outreach to student audiences.
  • Additional duties to be determined by student’s interest, ability, and departmental needs.

Educational Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent. An interest in communication is preferred.

Minimum Requirements

  • Awarded Federal Work Study.
  • Must be residing in DC, Maryland or Virginia during school year.
  • Willingness to learn TweetDeck, Bitly, Canva (graphics), Canvas (educational platform) and Handshake.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Unwavering attention to detail.
  • Proven record of dependability.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of team, as well as independently.
  • Data entry.

Preferred Requirements

  • It is preferred that the SOC Team Assistant be a student with a major or minor in the SOC.
  • Existing knowledge of TweetDeck, Canvas, Handshake and graphic tools (such as Canva).
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Proficiency with social media tools (Facebook, Instagram and Twitter preferred).

Work Environment

  • This position will be hybrid (part remote) with some physical presence will be required on-campus in the Career Center office during the fall 2022 semester.

Work Hours Per Week

  • 5-8 hours per week.

Salary Range

  • $16.10/hour.
