Social Media, Communications, & Outreach Assistant

The Center for Diversity & Inclusion (CDI) is seeking an undergraduate student to provide social media, communications, and outreach support for all the Center’s programs, resources, and initiatives. The position is 10 hours/week.

Work Environment

  • CDI enhances the personal growth of our students by providing specialized university-wide educational programs and training; Intergroup Dialogue; supports first-generation, LGBTQ+, multicultural, and the Summer Transition Enrichment Program (STEP) students. 


  • Draft weekly newsletter in consultation with Graduate Assistant of Support Programs 
  • Co-manage daily social media posts & scheduling with Graduate Assistant of Support Programs 
  • Support administrative logistics for co-sponsorships  
  • Co-manage CDI inbox with other outreach student staff members 
  • Foster community through online engagement in social media platforms 
  • Outreach to student organizations re: CDI news, programs, and resources
  • Collaborate with campus partners to promote news and events
  • Curate a list of local or national events for the week that are related to diversity, equity, and inclusion (i.e., PUT initiatives)
  • Design special project publications (i.e., First Generation Yearbook)
  • Support Center’s website updates 
  • Provide administrative support during Center programs to admit participants, track attendance, etc.  
  • Other duties as assigned 


  • Social media content development  
  • Graphics design knowledge 
  • Ability to learn website development program and comfortable with technology
  • Strong written communication skills with attention to inclusive language 
  • Strong organization skills to effectively manage multiple priorities  
  • Knowledgeable of multi-layered aspects of identity, including ability, race, religious belief and practice, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, racial identity and ethnicity. 
  • Strong facilitation skills with ability to navigate difficult conversations about Black issues & identity 

Salary Range

  • $15 per hour

Position Type/ Expected Hours of Work

  • Part-time 10 hours per week 

Required Education

  • Open to all undergraduate, Federal Work-Study eligible students enrolled in an American University degree program for the 2021-2022 academic year.
