Sustainability Interns are part-time, paid student interns hired to work on a variety of projects supporting the work of the Office of Sustainability. Projects will include data analysis and research related to ongoing sustainability projects, work on green building and campus sustainability reporting, education and curricula development, and other office administrative duties. Students will learn about sustainability topics such as green buildings, zero waste, carbon neutrality, and energy efficiency, as well as strategies for sustainability advancement in higher education.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

  • Sustainability Interns work 8-10 hours per week.
  • As paid employees, unexcused absences are considered grounds for termination.
  • This position begins with the Fall 2022 semester and lasts the duration of the academic year with potential opportunity for continuation.

Required Education and Experience

  • Current American University undergraduate student
  • Preferred Education and Experience
  • Passion for social responsibility and environmental sustainability
  • A self-starter able to work with minimal supervision
  • Strong communications skills
  • Demonstrated record of reliability
  • Ability to work independently as well as in teams
  • An open mind and a willingness to express new ideas
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
