Zero Waste Office Intern - Federal Work Study

Summary/Objective

American University’s Office of Zero Waste is looking for new interns to help improve its organic waste stream. With this position comes many opportunities to either work in the field or in the office and learn more about waste management systems on a college campus. Intern responsibilities are divided into two main groups. Interns working on the Compost Crew will directly help collect, track and analyze American University’s organic waste stream, while interns assigned to the Outreach team will focus on supporting the office’s social media activities and creating educational materials.

Compost Crew Intern Responsibilities

 

  • Organics Collection
    • Compost Crew Interns will drive an AU Facilities Management vehicle to 15 different dining locations on campus and collect food scraps to dispose of in AU’s organics central receiving compactor (on campus)
  • Contamination Inspections
    • Compost Crew Interns will conduct a surface level check of all compostable waste bags collected from compost bins around campus to prevent AU’s organic waste stream from becoming contaminated
  • Waste Stream Auditing
    • Compost Crew Interns will be responsible for auditing and recording contaminants found in AU’s organic waste stream, and help implement contamination reduction responses in order to help improve our program
  • Dish waste collection
    • Compost Crew interns will help AU community members properly sort their dishwaste in TDR during peak dining hours to help prevent additional food waste from being sent to landfill

Outreach Team Responsibilities

 

  • Social Media
    • Outreach Interns will help grow and manage the Zero Waste Office social media page through creating educational and insightful content about waste management with the goal of helping students improve their waste sorting skills
  • Educational Materials
    • Outreach Interns will help design informational materials focused on educating AU community members on sustainable waste management practices

Minimum Requirements

  • Federal Work Study Status is required for all applicants

Required Education and Experience

  • Hours will vary depending on the applicant’s financial aid package
  • Salary: 15.00/hr

Additional Information

  • This position is for both the fall and spring semesters (applicants can choose to do one semester, or both, if accepted)
  • Ability to qualify for AU driving privileges and comfortable driving on and off campus is strongly preferred
  • Interns will be required to attend mandatory trainings occurring throughout August and September
  • In addition to the above-mentioned responsibilities, interns will also be required to attend biweekly meetings with the Zero Waste Office Supervisor’s
  • Ability to lift ~50 pounds is strongly preferred for applicants interested in working on the Compost Crew Team
